On Wednesday, 28 May, at 6 pm, we kindly invite you to DESSA Gallery for the presentation of the architectural excursion of the students of Design studio Zorec to the Balearic island of Mallorca.

Mallorca has become a landmark in the European architectural landscape thanks to its groundbreaking approach to social construction. It is a meeting point for key issues of our time: how to build sustainably, how to create spatial solutions that respond to environmental, social and cultural challenges, and how to preserve local identity in the context of globalisation and market pressures.

Lessons from Mallorca: social architecture in the context of place

Student architectural excursion of Design studio Zorec, 22-29 April 2025

The Balearic island of Mallorca has become a landmark in the European architectural landscape thanks to its groundbreaking approach to social construction. It is a meeting point for key issues of our time: how to build sustainably, how to create spatial solutions that respond to environmental, social and cultural challenges, and how to preserve local identity in the context of globalisation and market pressures.

The architecture that is being developed in Mallorca is about more than building buildings, it is a way of thinking that puts people, nature and space on an equal footing. It begins with an exploration of space, materials and tradition - not as a sentiment, but as a logical starting point for a modern and responsible architecture. In this respect, Mallorca is not architecturaly nostalgic, but progressive. It builds not backwards but forwards, on critically considered and reconsidered foundations. The result is a subtle architectural expression that clearly addresses complex social challenges.

The architectural projects go beyond mere form-making, aiming at modest but thoughtful interventions that emerge from the local context. This approach includes the use of local materials, the preservation of craftsmanship and construction that adapts to the climate and the island's topography.

The Slovenian spatial context is fundamentally different. Can the Mallorcan experience serve as an example and help us to transfer the basic principles, motives and values to our own space?
