You are also cordially invited to the closing of the exhibition, which will be held on Friday, 7 March 2025, at 7 pm in the DESSA Gallery.
Before that, a student conference, We Are Working on This: Student Conference on Theoretical Practice of Architecture will take place from 10 am to 6 pm.

Theory of architecture is a practice; that is to say, a thinking and practical activity with a specific temporality all its own. It must always also go back, return to the past, to the well-constructed works of architecture – manifested in books, articles, built structures, and architectural and urban projects – in order to be able to go on, develop further. And to establish itself and act in the present such that at the same time it also opens up possibilities that allow it to continue in the future – continue in a way that is not already inscribed in the given present and the set of possibilities this present offers. This is the dimension of architectural theory that interests us in our project: its capacity to cut into the linear flow of time, and in so doing open up the way for some new yet unimagined possibilities.

To be more precise, we are interested in the capacity of architectural theory to recognize those architectural works that have succeeded in responding to their time and situation, their historical moment, such that they raised questions that have remained open, unanswered; articulated problems that remained unresolved; projects started yet remain unfinished. And unanswered, unresolved, unfinished, not because they were ill-conceived, not because they did not succeed but precisely because they did succeed. That they succeeded is manifested by the fact that in and with them a certain surplus was produced, something that has yet to be untangled and which requires further work. A surplus that appears as an open question and can, as such, act as both a point of support and an invitation to continue – to continue thinking and constructing architecture.

The aim of our project is to identify and articulate such open questions, problems, and projects that should in our view be (re)addressed and thought through – again; re-thought in a way appropriate to our time. That is, they should be rethought yet again, differently, and more effectively. In so doing we hope to outline some points of orientation for the further work of architecture, in both theoretical and design practice – particularly in the fractured and scattered circumstances that characterise our time and world. We will develop our project in the form of lectures, reading seminars, a student conference and theoretical debates; this will also serve as our final exhibit. So, instead of objects and images we will exhibit our practice itself in the DESSA gallery. Our exhibit will be the theoretical practice of architecture at work.

Prof. dr. Petra Čeferin

The series of events is curated by Petra Čeferin (author of the concept and curator of the exhibition) and Uroš Mikanovič (co-curator). It will conclude with a student conference of the seminar on the theoretical practice of architecture (2024/25), which is taking place at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana under their mentorship.

Petra Čeferin: Arhitektura in intelektualna emancipacija: Plečnikove konstrukcije javnega prostora v Ljubljani

Predavanje povezuje delo filozofa Jacquesa Rancièrja, njegov koncept intelektualne emancipacije, z delom Jožeta Plečnika – njegovim projektom konstrukcij javnega prostora v Ljubljani v tridesetih letih.

Miloš Kosec: Odmevi baroka: Ravnikarjevo novo krilo Narodne galerije in barok v arhitekturni teoriji 20. stoletja

Pier Paolo Tamburelli: On Bramante

The lecture considers the work of the Italian Renaissance architect Donato Bramante and through this reappraisal suggests a possible agenda for current architectural practice. Bramante, lecture argues, offers an excellent starting point to imagine a contemporary theory of space, to reflect on the relationship between architecture and politics, and to look back—with neither nostalgia nor contempt—at the tradition of Western classicism.

Starting from a discussion of the difference in the work of Bramante in Milan (1481–1499) and Rome (1499–1514), Tamburelli highlights the peculiarities of Bramante's architecture, especially in comparison to that of his predecessor Leon Battista Alberti and successor Andrea Palladio. This in turn opens up new possibilities for appreciating his spatial experiments, and to derive from Bramante's abstraction and disassociation of form from function a revised theory of space for contemporary architecture. Such a theory might even advance a newfound political understanding of classicism, and a model—perhaps more valid now than ever before—for a public architecture.

Teresa Stoppani: Beyond aldorossi

The work of Aldo Rossi, which spans the 1950s through the 1990s, remains a critical point in post-modernist architecture. The influence of his teachings and projects created a distinct style, as well as a cohort of followers who produced pedestrian imitations of his drawings, forms, and laconic volumes. They were the aldorossis of the 1980s and 1990s. Curiously, even the maestro became an aldorossi, as he continued to reiterate his personal schemata which by then had become familiar to architecture culture and practice around the world.

Yet, beyond idiosyncrasy and imitations, Rossi’s critical and theoretical work in his teaching, writing, and projects continues to demand attention, giving rise to uneasy questions and possible ways of operating in the present. We need to look behind the hypnotic seduction of Rossi’s imagery and the silent solemnity of his self-referential architectural forms, and shift our attention from individual(istic) memories to the collective dimension of his work. Rossi’s work exposes the relational nature of architecture and of the city, and offers the possibility of approaching present social and environmental concerns with collective energy and an accumulation of mutual influences and adjustments.

To določa odprtost, dostopnost in prehodnost poroznih prostorov. Prav zaradi tega ostajajo odprti in vključujoči.

Roemer van Toorn: Revolutionary Love in the Architecture of Lina Bo Bardi

In this talk, Roemer van Toorn will talk about Revolutionary Love as political concept. Revolutionary Love is an open entreaty to enjoy life in all its complexity and possibility—one based on love (a twoness) moving away from identity, which would allow a society to relate despite the differences therein, between the human and more-than-human. It is about a love for the world (Amur Mundi) in all its plurality. Its genuine passion is a shared construction.

“It is precisely its open character that is so moving,” say Anne Dufourmantelle and Antonio Negri, “a feeling of strength, a need to create. In other words, a need for communality, sharing, cooperating. So the personal project is also a political project. It is not enough to want freedom, the point is to make freedom productive.”

How this political concept, which we also see reemerging in colonial studies, can “redistribute the sensible” in architecture (building on the ideas of Jacques Ranciere) is one of the key questions the talk will explore by looking at the architecture of the Italian-born Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914–1992). The way the human and more-than-human meet in her work is outstanding, ahead of its time, and until recently overlooked by many. And it is here that my concept of the power of gentleness in architecture, an aesthetics of hospitality, is also at play.

Roemer van Toorn is professor of Architecture Theory, director of Doctoral Studies, and Head of the research group Making Architecture Politically at the UMA School of Architecture, Umeå University, Sweden. From 1993 till 2010 he ran the History and Theory program and was Head of Publications at the Berlage Institute, the Netherlands. Reading seminars

Estetika med ekologijo in politikami javnega prostora

V drugem terminu bomo obravnavali esej »Unsettling Eco-Scapes« švedske krajinskoarhitekturne teoretičarke in profesorice Marie Hellström Reimer, ki prevprašuje hegemonijo ustaljenih konstelacij estetskih norm in družbenih imperativov, že več stoletij globoko vtkanih v krajinsko oblikovanje.

Skozi primerjavo besedil bomo iskali relevantne modalitete produkcije estetske izkušnje prostora onkraj harmoniziranja in »lepega«.

V prvem predavanju – »From Strasbourg to Paris« – Ferro začrta začetne faze te diferenciacije in avtonomizacije arhitekture. V drugem – »From Paris to Dubai« – predstavi racionalizacijo in druge transformacije arhitekture v času modernih revolucij, v zadnjem – »The Case of Art« – pa sledi vzporednim transformacijam umetnosti.

Seminar bosta vodila Uroš Mikanovič in Blaž Šenica.
